Farmer Producer Organization (FPO)
Bhoomi Sustainable Development Society (BSDS) has taken significant strides in promoting the interests of farmers by forming five Farmer Producer Companies (FPOs) across Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Tumkur districts. With the generous support of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), these FPOs have been established to empower farmers and enhance their collective bargaining power in the market.
Key Features and Initiatives
Formation of FPOs: BSDS has facilitated the formation of five FPOs, each comprising 300 to 500 farmer shareholders. These FPOs operate under the purview of the Companies Act, ensuring legal recognition and accountability in their operations.
Support from NABARD: The establishment of FPOs has been made possible through the support and guidance provided by NABARD. As a key partner in rural development, NABARD has played a pivotal role in empowering farmers and fostering agricultural entrepreneurship through the formation of FPOs.
Collective Marketing Activities: BSDS has initiated collective marketing activities within the FPOs to promote the marketing of agricultural produce. By leveraging the collective strength of farmer members, FPOs aim to access better markets, negotiate fair prices, and enhance the profitability of agricultural operations.
Capacity Building: BSDS provides comprehensive training and capacity-building programs to FPO members, equipping them with essential skills in agricultural practices, financial management, market linkages, and value addition. These capacity-building initiatives enable farmers to make informed decisions and effectively manage their FPOs.
Promotion of Sustainable Practices: FPOs under BSDS’s guidance prioritize the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, including organic farming, soil conservation, and water management. By promoting environmentally friendly farming methods, FPOs contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the long-term viability of agricultural systems.
Market Linkages: BSDS facilitates the establishment of strong market linkages for FPOs, connecting them with buyers, retailers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural value chain. Through these linkages, FPOs gain access to broader markets, diversify their product offerings, and maximize returns for their members.
Empowerment of Farmers: The formation of FPOs empowers farmers by providing them with a collective platform to voice their concerns, access resources, and advocate for their interests. By working together, farmers can overcome common challenges, leverage economies of scale, and improve their socio-economic well-being.
Through the establishment of FPOs, BSDS is committed to promoting farmer-centric initiatives that enhance agricultural productivity, foster rural prosperity, and contribute to sustainable development in the region. By harnessing the collective strength of farmers, FPOs play a crucial role in transforming the agricultural landscape and improving the livelihoods of farming communities.
