Suvarnajala Yojane
The Suvarnajala Yojane, supported by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) department of Karnataka, is an initiative implemented by Bhoomi Sustainable Development Society (BSDS) in Chikmagalur District. The primary objective of the project is to raise awareness about rainwater harvesting structures and the importance of rainwater conservation in schools across the taluks of Chikmagalur District.
Key Objectives and Activities
Awareness Creation: BSDS conducts awareness programs targeting headmasters and members of the School Development and Management Committees (SDMCs) in various schools across Chikmagalur District. Through workshops, seminars, and educational sessions, BSDS educates school stakeholders about the significance of rainwater harvesting and its potential to address water scarcity issues.
Training and Capacity Building: The project includes training sessions for school staff and SDMC members on the design, construction, and maintenance of rainwater harvesting structures. BSDS equips participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to implement rainwater harvesting systems effectively within school premises.
Demonstration Sites: BSDS establishes demonstration rainwater harvesting structures in select schools to showcase practical examples of rainwater conservation techniques. These demonstration sites serve as learning resources for students, teachers, and community members interested in adopting similar practices in their respective areas.
Integration with Curriculum: BSDS collaborates with educational authorities to integrate lessons on rainwater harvesting and water conservation into the school curriculum. By incorporating these topics into classroom activities and educational materials, BSDS aims to instill a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability among students.
Community Engagement: The project emphasizes community participation and engagement in promoting rainwater harvesting initiatives. BSDS encourages students and school communities to take an active role in advocating for water conservation practices both within schools and in their surrounding communities.
Monitoring and Evaluation: BSDS conducts regular monitoring and evaluation of the Suvarnajala Yojane to assess the impact of awareness campaigns and the effectiveness of rainwater harvesting initiatives in schools. Feedback from school stakeholders and observations of water usage patterns help BSDS refine its approach and strategies over time.
Through the Suvarnajala Yojane, BSDS endeavors to foster a culture of water conservation and sustainability among school communities in Chikmagalur District. By empowering students and educators with the knowledge and tools to harvest rainwater effectively, BSDS aims to contribute to the long-term resilience of local communities and the environment.
